The mission of Arrakis Therapeutics is to extend small molecule medicines into new realms of biology by discovering and developing compounds that selectively target RNA (“rSM”). By targeting distinct RNA structure/function relationships, Arrakis is generating drug candidates with novel mechanisms of action for molecular targets that are challenging to drug in disease areas with high unmet medical need. 


Arrakis uses next-generation sequencing (NGS) assays to power our platform for identifying druggable RNA structures. The Associate Scientist/Senior Associate Scientist will have an opportunity to make an impact on the nascent field of rSM discovery by developing and applying world-class NGS methods to elucidate RNA structure features inside living cells and in vitro. This individual will work as part of a team to integrate these structural analyses with functional analyses and high-resolution structural biology experiments to support our drug discovery process. The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a collaborative, fast-paced start-up environment, leveraging a high degree of integrity, intelligence and innovation to make a large impact on our mission.


Job Responsibilities:


  • Perform RNA chemical probing (e.g., SHAPE, DMS and psoralen) on RNA samples in vitro and on live cells.
  • Perform both targeted and transcriptomic NGS library preparation from chemically-probed RNA samples.
  • Develop novel NGS library preparation methods to enable assays of RNA structure in cells and in vitro.
  • Perform Illumina sequencing on a MiSeq instrument and interface with computational biologists to transfer data and sample information.
  • Work with automated liquid handlers for high throughput NGS library preparation.
  • Generate new and innovative approaches to problems by exhibiting a probing mind and penetrating insights.
  • Carefully document experiments in an electronic lab notebook and communicate results to collaborators.
  • Work effectively with a cross-functional biology, informatics, assay development and chemistry team to deliver high-quality results in an efficient manner.




  • B.S. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or Biology with 5+ years of relevant industry experience or Master’s degree with 3+ years of relevant industry experience.  Relevant academic experience will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish NGS methods and perform sequencing-based assays.
  • Extensive experience with NGS library preparation, including RNA-Seq library preparation.
  • Experience in molecular biology with RNA manipulation preferred.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture preferred.
  • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and cooperatively as part of a team.
  • Proactive and efficient to enable high-quality results while fostering a positive work environment.
  • Exhibits passion and excitement over work. Has a can-do attitude without losing objectivity.
  • Adjusts quickly to changing priorities and conditions and copes effectively with complexity and change.
